Soon I’ll be heading to the US for work where the maximum temperature is currently minus 15 degrees celsius. I have no idea what to wear to keep warm in that sort of temperature but fortunately I will be spending pretty much all of my time indoors. My focus is on warm clothes suitable for the office and then I’ll add lots of layers for getting to and from the office. So today I made a wool skirt suitable to wear with knee-high boots and thick tights.
This skirt was made using an old Style pattern (number 2146), and the fabric was from my pre-Christmas sale shopping at Spotlight – just $2 per metre. I’m really happy with how this turned out but it was a bit of a struggle sewing woolen fabric in 32 degree heat! More new warm outfits to come in the coming week or two! Here are a few more photos.

I REALLY like this skirt! Very cute! I also love your fabric choice. I have never heard of Style patterns before, but I live in the USA so that could explain it. Where abut will you be staying in the USA and for how long? It has been a very cold winter here this year. Also a lot of snow.
Nora
Hi Nora, I don’t think Style exists here anymore either. Perhaps someone bought them out. The pattern I used was copyrighted 1991, and the headoffice back then was in Glasgow. I’m travelling to Denver and Omaha. Will be over for a week or so. Any tips on what I should be focusing on packing?
Gorgeous skirt, it’ll look fabulous with boots!
Yes, lots of layers is the key for cold weather, they’re easier to adjust for the right temperature by adding or subtracting, and they’re actually warmer than just one thick layer. Ultrafine merino is a great base-layer to wear under just about anything! Hat, gloves, scarf are also important, although hats do muss your hair unfortunately. I had to do some winter sewing for Canada before Xmas in the NZ heat and it was rather nauseating at times so I really feel for you doing it in much hotter weather!
Pack lots of moisturisers and lipbalms because it’s dry dry dry in the winter, especially coming from warm humidity!
